5 Major Bridges Over The Mighty Brahmaputra River in Assam

Assam is a state in northeastern India, south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra  and  Barak  River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km2 (30,285 sq mi). The state is bordered by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur to the east; MeghalayaTripuraMizoram and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor, a 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide strip of land that connects the state to the rest of India. Assamese and Boro are the official languages of Assam, while Bengali is an additional official language in the Barak Valley.


The river Brahmaputra is the most important river of Assam. The bridges over the river and its tributaries are the most important lifeline to the people of the state. There are many big and small bridges over the river Brahmaputra and its tributaries; but today here I will mention only the 5 most important and iconic bridge worth travelling too. All these 5 bridges are architectural marvels and are of most scenically beautiful. 


1. Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola Sadiya Bridge)

Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola Sadiya Bridge) is over Lohit river which is one the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra. The bridge connects two village of Tinsukia district of Assam, Dhola and Sadiya Village. Sadiya village is the most eastern part of Assam and it was the capital of the Chutia Kingdom. The bridge is name after the famous singer and Bharat Ratna of Assam Late Shri Bhupen Hazarika. The bridge is the longest bridge in India and it can withstand 60 tons of weight including tanks with a length span of 9.15 kilometers.



2. Bogibeel Bridge

Bogibeel bridge is built over the Brahmaputra River. The bridge is 4.94 kilometers long and it connects Dhemaji and Dibrugarh districts of Assam. It is the 4th bridge built over the river Brahmaputra river and India's longest railway cum road bridge. Bogibeel also bag the title of Asia's 2nd largest rail cum road bridge. The bridge looks magnificent from and ariel view from Drones or aero plane. It is the 5th longest bridge in India.


3. Kalia Bhomora Bridge (Kalia Bhomora Setu)

Kolia Bhomara Setu is one of the oldest bridge in Assam over river Brahmaputra. It connects Tezpur (Sonitpur District) with Kaliabor (nagaon Distrcit) of Assam. This river bridge of Assam has a length of 3.015 kilometer. The bridge is complete in the year 14th April 1987. Kolia Bhomara Setu is named after Ahom General Kolia Bhomara Phukan. The bridge is standing over 27 pillars and it is the 2nd oldest bridge in Assam over the river Brahmaputra.


4. Naranarayan Setu 







Naranarayan Setu at Goalpara district of Assam is the 3rd longest bridge in Assam and the 3rd bridge to be built over the river Brahmaputra. The bridge connects Jogighopa of Bongaigaon district and Pancharatna of Goalpara district. Naranarayan is name after the 16th century Koch King Naranarayan, the last ruler of the undivided Koch dynasty of the Kamata Kingdom. The length of the bridge is 2.284 kilometers.



5. Saraighat Bridge

Saraighat is the oldest bridge of Assam connecting Amingaon of Kamrup rural district and Pandu of Jalukbari of Kamrup urban district of Assam. The length of the bridge is 1.492 kilometers. The bridge is rail cum roadways. It is one of the significant bridges of commerce and connecting Assam with rest of India through Railways.
